چکیده

In this paper, we propose a synchronization-aware VM scheduler for parallel applications in Xen. The proposed scheduler prevents threads from waiting for a significant amount of time during synchronization. For this purpose, we propose an identification scheme that can identify the threads that have awaited other threads for a long time. In this scheme, a detection module that can infer the internal status of guest OSs was developed. We also present a scheduling policy that can accelerate bottlenecks of concurrent VMs. We implemented our VM scheduler in the recent Xen hypervisor with para-virtualized Linux-based operating systems. We show that our approach can improve the performance of concurrent VMs by up to 43% as compared to the credit scheduler. key words: virtual machine scheduling, parallel application

Cache-Aware Virtual Machine Scheduling on Multi-Core Architecture

Facing practical limits to increasing processor frequencies, manufacturers have resorted to multi-core designs in their commercial products. In multi-core implementations, cores in a physical package share the last-level caches to improve inter-core communication. To efficiently exploit this facility, operating systems must employ cache-aware schedulers. Unfortunately, virtualization software, ...

Transparently bridging semantic gap in CPU management for virtualized environments

Consolidated environments are progressively accommodating diverse and unpredictable workloads in conjunctionwith virtual desktop infrastructure and cloud computing. Unpredictableworkloads, however, aggravate the semantic gap between the virtual machine monitor and guest operating systems, leading to inefficient resource management. In particular, CPU management for virtual machines has a critic...

Performance Prediction and Evaluation of Parallel Applications in KVM, Xen, and VMware

Cloud computing platforms are considerably attractive for parallel applications that perform large-scale, computationally intensive tasks. These platforms can provide elastic computing resources to the parallel software owing to system virtualization technology. Almost every cloud service provider operates on a pay-per-use basis, and therefore, it is important to estimate the performance of par...

Packet Forwarding Using Xen

Network virtualization allows the development of systems with several virtual routers (VR) over the same physical router. Each virtual router can execute, at the same time, different protocol stacks without disrupting the coexisting routers. The main purpose of this work is to analyze Xen capabilities and limitations and compare its efficiency with native solutions. Tests are performed in order...

Communication-aware CPU Management for Consolidated Virtualization-based Hosting Platforms

Recent advances in software and architectural support for server virtualization have created interest in using this technology in the design of consolidated hosting platforms. Since virtualization enables easier and faster application migration as well as secure co-location of antagonistic applications, higher degrees of server consolidation are likely to result in such virtualization-based hos...
